Wound Center Specializes in Treating Non-healing Surgical Wounds

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (Oct. 13, 2023) – This month, Northwest Medical Center – Bentonville Wound & Hyperbaric Center is “going pink” in support of local breast cancer survivors and in honor of those the community has lost to the disease.
Breast cancer has affected many lives. There are more than 4 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. This includes those who are undergoing treatment and those who have completed it.
Breast cancer treatments have continued to improve as a result of research and funding and can include surgery and radiation. While these treatments are often successful in eliminating the cancer, they can have long-lasting effects months or even years after treatment has concluded.
While there are many ways to support breast cancer survivors, the wound center is committed to improving quality of life through wound care by specializing in treating non-healing surgical wounds, compromised skin grafts or surgical flaps and symptoms occurring as a result of radiation therapy.
One method used in the center is hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy. This therapy is indicated by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) as a treatment for a variety of cancer-related complications. Many studies and clinical trials have demonstrated the benefits of HBO therapy in treating these complications.
During the course of treatment, 100% pure oxygen is breathed inside a pressurized chamber, helping blood to carry more oxygen to organs and tissues. HBO therapy works by increasing oxygen levels in damaged tissues, stimulating growth of new blood vessels and enhancing immune cell function. These are all important factors that contribute to wound healing and increase quality of life in patients.
